Populace Theatre Company

A theatre company created in response to the arrests of anti-cuts protestors in March 2011.

From 2011- 2016 I was the co-Artistic Director of POPULACE, whose practice built on stimuli from current events and responded through devised, interactive and often movement-based theatre to energise audiences and galvanise their potential for action. From hacking gendered marketing, to using guerrilla gardening as a way to protest gentrifcation and flash mob ballets to draw attention to homophobic international policy, Populace sat at the intersection of direct action and theatre.

POPULACE won two IdeasTap Awards and created work for Bush Theatre, Rich Mix, The Junction, Ovalhouse, Lyric Hammersmith, Hackney Empire, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Theatre Royal Stratford East, The Roundhouse and Southbank Centre. POPULACE also ran an annual event, Reclaim The Future, where artists of various disciplines were invited to rapidly respond to world events and celebrate counter-culture.

This is a company that can excel in using art as a catalyst for change”
